If you follow junior tennis in Hong Kong, you might already know Jack Cooper. He's a student at Hong Kong International School, won the SCAA Boys Singles title, and recently reached his first ITF Juniors final. What follows is drawn from his own words, a window into the mindset and daily life of a young player steadily making his mark.
Tennis clicked for Jack early, and not because of any single big moment. "I've been playing tennis since I was a little kid, and I've always loved the competitiveness and the challenge of being in an individual sport. It's just something that clicked with me early on." What made him stay was the feeling that he could go into any match and truly compete. "I stayed with tennis because I felt I could compete in every match I played. That sense of being fully engaged and always having something to fight for is what made the sport stick for me."
He enjoys the whole package that comes with the sport — travelling to tournaments, meeting new people, time spent with friends and coaches on the road, and the one-on-one battle where the result rests squarely on his own shoulders. When asked what kind of moment makes him smile most, he points to the long three-set matches. "There's something special about battling for that long and coming out on top."
Behind those wins is a daily routine built on discipline. Jack's alarm goes off at 5:45 a.m. He arrives at HKIS by about 7:15, getting in an hour of work before classes start at 8:30 and run until 3:00. Right after school, he heads to Kowloon for training that lasts until 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. Then it's back home for homework and test preparation, with lights out around 10:30. It's a demanding rhythm, and he's upfront about what it costs. Holidays are usually spent at tournaments, not on vacation. Still, he feels the support around him. "HKIS is pretty flexible. I'm lucky to have teachers who support me, help schedule tests, and make sure I can catch up when I'm away."

The juggling act doesn't stop when he travels. Assignments still need attention, so he stays in touch with teachers and uses any downtime to keep up. Sleep can be difficult with travel and matches, but sticking to a routine helps. HKIS allows him to make up tests and meet with teachers remotely, which makes a big difference.
Pressure is part of the game, and Jack has learned to work through it. He recalls a long three-set match where nerves took over. "I was really nervous, but I focused on staying calm, sticking to my routines, and taking it one point at a time. That helped me get through it." That ability to reset in difficult moments has been key to his progress.
Winning the SCAA Boys Singles title turned out to be a turning point. "Taking the SCAA Boys Singles title last year definitely lifted my confidence. I proved to myself that I could perform consistently and win tight matches, especially in a challenging final. It set me up well for the ITF tournaments that followed." That confidence carried him to his first ITF Juniors final, after several near misses. "It felt great to finally break into a final after reaching several semifinals." His focus now is on building consistency: more finals, a title soon, and regularly making quarterfinals and semifinals.
Jack hopes his story can encourage younger players. "I hope my story shows young players in Hong Kong that you can achieve a lot if you stay consistent and work hard. I'm still improving every day, but if what I've done so far encourages someone to train a bit more or believe in themselves a bit more, that means a lot to me." For those watching him compete, his message is simple: "Never give up."
Tennis has given him more than results. The three values he carries are resilience, determination, and sportsmanship. "Beyond rankings and trophies, tennis has built my work ethic, character, and perseverance." To his younger self, he would say only this: "Hard work pays off." And when asked what tennis means to him, Jack's answer is as direct as his approach on court: "Tennis has given me discipline and opportunities."
